Greatest Hits Vol. 1 - Noah's Ark

Matt Atkins

"Genesis", or better titled, "The Genesis", is a book of beginnings as told in ancient Jewish culture and later written down for posterity. It is not the only account of the beginnings of the cosmos, the earth, humans, conflict, languages, etc..., but it is the one that has been passed on to us, as Christ-followers.

Last week, Aaron introduced us to the Jewish idea of YHWH's involvement in, and delight in, creation. Not only did they see YHWH as being the originator, but also that YHWH was present, involved with, and delighted in this creation. Remember, "Eden" means delight or desire.

So, how are we to understand this same YHWH, just a few stories later, regretting (Gen. 6:6) having ever made mankind? That seems a bit reactionary, don't you think? Certainly, if YHWH created us, they knew that we might (would, did) choose sin, and become nasty buggers, right?

How are we to understand this ancient story, that is one of 100's of ancient flood stories?

Let's talk about it...

Matt
