Theodicy

Theodicy is a word that many of us do not know, but most of us have practiced. We have participated in this theological task if we have ever experienced grief, sorrow, or pain. Times of grief and disaster are naturally times when we question the nature of God. With Theodicy, we "seek an explanation of why a perfectly good powerful and all-knowing God would permit evil." It's a practice we feel deep in our gut. We wonder: If God is good and strong, then why do we experience evil and suffering? Some answers that people give for this question might be helpful, but too often they are not. Chances are those answers are given from a place of compassion, but sometimes they have the opposite effect. As you think about the question of Theodicy, what answers have you heard (good or bad), and how do they speak to how you view God? I look forward to considering these things with you on Sunday. ~Aaron
